The association Sammen på Tværs

On April 1, 2024, the association, Sammen på Tværs, Elderlearn's activities will continue. Sammen på Tværs is a newly founded non-profit association that aims to build bridges between generations, strengthen social cohesion and contribute to the cohesion of society.

If you volunteer with Elderlearn, it doesn't mean anything to you and your match. You simply continue to meet as usual. You can follow along on Elderlearnvisit, where we will keep you updated on the Association.

What is Elderlearn?

Elderlearn is an activity of the association Sammen på Tværs, which matches volunteer Danish seniors (65+) with newcomers who want to improve their Danish. The visits help improve integration opportunities for the newcomer and create unique relationships across generations and cultures.

Participation is free for all volunteers, as Elderlearn receives financial support through municipal partnerships and foundations.

How Elderlearn works

Seniors and newcomers sign up on Elderlearn.dk. We match the best couples based on distance, background and interests. Once a couple is matched, they are both notified and usually meet at the senior's home. We regularly ask both newcomers and seniors how their match is going.

The meetings

Meetings are scheduled once a week for a minimum of one hour. However, it is up to the participants to decide how often and for how long at a time they want to meet.

To ensure a safe and good first meeting, Elderlearn is in close dialog with the participants. In addition, we send conversation topics for the first meetings to make it easier to start the conversations. If a match stalls or needs to be terminated, Elderlearn will make sure to offer a new match to the participant who still has the desire and ability to continue as a volunteer.

Brita and Anne

"The focus is on the content of the conversation, and we talk about everything from work and family life to movies and vacations. The most important thing is simply that we speak Danish." - Anne
